Day Trip to Great Falls, Virginia
National Park Site
noted for its fascinating
Geologic, Native American and Colonial History
within 40 minutes of downtown Washington, D.C.
Great Falls is the site of an 80 ft. waterfall of the Potomac River, separating Virginia from Maryland. The rocks here reveal a history of an ancient mountain range which formed as, the result of collision of the African and North American continents..
The name “Patowmack” comes from the Algonkian language and meansr “meeting place.” This area was the site for meetings of the Algonkian and Iroquois Tribes 10,000 years ago.
As President of the United States, George Washington supported the construction of a system of skirting canals to improve navigation along the Potomac. The canals at Great Falls Parks are extremely well preserved.
Participate in a mystery tour of the geologic features of Great Falls Park led by Doc Rock, resident Great Falls Geology Professor and Children’s Book Author.
Dr. Barbara “Doc Rock” Frank has written “The Pothole Mystery and the Secret of Balanced Rocks in Great Falls Park,” available in December 2002; and “Colliding Continents, Volcanoes, Dinosaurs and Meteor Impact,in the Nation’s Capital,” available in Spring 2003.
- "Doc Rock's passion for Geology is contagious. I never look at a fossil, rock, or mineral without a sense of excitement and appreciation.” Marco Munari
